In the case of Trump, his declassification process was any classified documents leaving the white house were automatically declassified. That's where the debate is at. That and who can actually take possession of such documents.

A US Senator does not have constitutional authority to declassify anything therefore he took classified documents illegally and stored them in unsecure locations all over the place. So if Trump is in trouble for taking his documents home, Dementia is in ten times more trouble.

When they discovered that this ^^^^^ was a lie, then they searched his home and took back the documents that trump failed to surrender.
