Depends what you mean by "modern suffering of the common man".

I'd say that much of the suffering comes from many different directions.

1) Mental problems
2) an inability to cope in society
3) the creation of a fantasy world (because of number 2) and trying to live in a manner that doesn't equate to reality
4) not being brought up properly
5) politicians on the take


Probably loads more different things that come together
