We are a mature and civilized species for the most part so WHY do we need paid MINI KINGS working full time to further control our lives?
Things are basically the same from day to day for most of us yet these buffoons in DC never leave and get paid for nothing. Do we really need NEW LAWS BEING DEBATED EVERY SINGLE DAY?

I would suggest that we cut government employee positions by at least 50%. PERMANENTLY
We should also make elected federal offices part time & unpaid. There is no reason for them to gather in person most days. The last year has proven how utterly useless Congress can be. It's time their value was accurately reflected.

In today's era with current technology there is almost no reason for these leeches to be in DC.

I'd like them to be volunteers. Not paid politicians.

That's what it was supposed to be when Government was first introduced.

Those in office were supposed to serve for six months then go back to their businesses or their farms. No one was ever supposed to make a living as a politician.

Where is that written?

If the founders wanted that, they could have worded the Constitution to limit you to one term

They should actually have to live by the oath they took when sworn in and to live by every law they pass. They should be removed without fanfare for disregarding existing law!

They do

Provide an example where they don’t

You know the Republicans are getting their ass kicked when you see thread after thread after thread like this claiming how "they don't care if government works."

It's so transparent.

Congress should be paid more so that the wealthy are not the only ones who can take the job

O'rly?

Can you tell us which amendment changed Representative terms from six months to two years, and Senate terms from six months to six years?

Yeah, let's not pay our federal politicians so it will be a job that only rich people could afford to do! GREAT IDEA!

Let's not pay our federal politicians so they will be that much more susceptible to bribery! GREAT IDEA!

Congress used to be a part-time position. It all began to change in 1913 when the 16th (direct income tax) and the 17 (popular vote for senators) amendments were passed, along with the formation of the federal reserve which allowed the government to spend, spend, spend (and borrow, borrow, borrow).

Prior to 1913, taxes were apportioned to states based on their population, and taxes were collected via tariffs and excise taxes. There were other times of income tax but they were short lived and almost always associated with wartime debt. The income tax gives congress control of how people spend their money and also serves as a vehicle for wealth distribution.

The senate used to be referred to as the States house, and the House of Representatives was referred to as the people’s house. The 17th Amendment served to usurp power and influence from state governments to the federal government. When senators were selected by state governments they served the interest of their constituents which was their state government. Now that they are elected by direct popular vote of the people in a state, that is the interest they serve. The states mo longer have representation.

Prior to 1913, virtual every member of congress had another job or career. Within 15 years their pay scale began to raise and their time in Washington increased.
