Rubbish. Trump IS a former president and front runner in the election, not some unknown wannabe. Whether guilty or innocent, either way, being forced to sit in court affording the leftwing MSM endless photo ops for front page stories bashing him to the voters 24/7 would be an unprecedented heavy additional burden on hurting his chances.

If Trump is guilty, he will be just as guilty after the election. Holding the trials in an election year is a sure way, even if he is ultimately found innocent of the charges, to assure that he loses again anyway, thus serving the true intent of these hearings to keep Trump out of office again.

As of right now Grifty is a private citizen. He holds no office. The dates for court are set by the courts. The date for his Florida case was a compromise and will start mid May of next year. Plenty of time to find him guilty or innocent before the election in November.
It's true that his trial will play out during primary season but that shouldn't knock him off his frontrunner spot. He will be the Republican nominee.

Obviously being a criminal defendant is not a good look for somebody running for office. It gives people pause when they make their decision on who to vote for. But Grifty got nobody to blame for that but himself

I'll just ignore the political opinion but I'll talk about what you seem to believe should be.

The law works law and on precedent, so this is what you want.

You want the immunization of either the frontrunner of just the Republican party or the immunization of the frontrunner of both parties, or the immunization of the frontrunner of any potential party for any criminal act. This for the period of the election. This despite the fact that such immunization is unprecedented and unsupported by any law.

So some problems are. What polling data to determine such frontrunner status will we go by? What happens when the frontrunner changes? Do we extent the protections to anyone who has the potential to become a frontrunner, etc. etc.
