Hundreds of Portland-area felony cases dismissed over public defender staffing shortages | Fox News

They just passed some of the worst gun laws in the country and are simultaneously dismissing felony gun charges against multiple people.

Clown World indeed.

Ha! But I'd bet if you defended yourself against Antifa and wasted one of them they'll provide you an attorney in a hot hurry.

Why do they need public defenders when the prosecutors are looking for excuses not to prosecute?

Also to the people of Portland, Gooder and Harder.

Ok. Let’s cover this. In the Constitution. A little below what many of you think is the only Amendment. There is a requirement by our founders to give the accused access to an attorney.

See the Sixth Amendment.

Now if these rules are not followed. The case is then a real problem. Because while the guy is guilty as sin, he was not afforded the rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

The Founders intended it to be hard to convict someone. And the State or Government if you prefer, has to make sure to follow the rules. The Judges are the referees making sure the rules are followed.

Now the shortage of public defenders. It is a question of supply and demand. The supply is limited and the demand is great. So some won’t get even that minimal representation. Do we shrug and ignore the Constitution? Or do we obey the founders intent and seek to rectify the situation?

Some posting here seem to think it is a travesty. The guilty get away with their crimes. Free to commit more. I think it is exactly what we have to do, when we intentionally underfund and overwork the Public Defenders Office.

There are more rights than the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. And if you want to maintain that right, you better start to pay attention to the others. The Constitution is a tapestry, and you can’t pluck one thread out and expect the picture to remain.

There are so many unemployed morons with law degrees running around they cretins are suing law schools for taking their money. Barely half of them get jobs in law, and a lot of those are just companies paying them crappy wages to advise them on how to screw over employees and harass competitors. This is just another imaginary 'shortage' due entirely to mismanagement and incompetence. Portland is just reaping what it sows, like every other failed city.
