What immediate danger existed? When you look at the video I provided did you take note of the Swat Squad of Police with automatic weapons in the stairwell right beside the doorway? None of them fired their weapons and they were on the same side of the door as the protesters! Why does Byrd feel a threat to HIS life and they don't?

The squad with rifles was not defending members of Congress and their staff and Byrd was unaware of their presence.

Byrd knows that the rioters were specifically coming after the people he was defending. A coward would have stood aside and let them flood into the House floor, but Byrd stood his ground.
