It seems to me that consciousness is the sum of the whole being. For instance, from the video it was pondered that all living things have varying degrees of consciousness with the example of trees exhibiting some level of consciousness. Mind you they aren’t saying that trees are aware of their actions but that given certain stimulation they respond.

Trees don’t have brains so their degree of consciousness cannot be located in a brain, ergo their consciousness is the sum of their whole being. So why couldn’t it be the same for humans?

I believe the development of central nervous systems led animals to become aware that they are conscious. Obviously to varying degrees of awareness based on the degree of development of their central nervous system which includes the brain.

Compared to the brains of lesser animals the human brain requires a disproportionate amount of energy to function. Something like 1/3 of our calories go to functioning our brain. It has been postulated that that level of calories intake was only made possible by the discovery of fire and the subsequent cooking of food which serves to pre-digest our food and make it possible for us to consume enough calories to allow our central nervous systems to evolve into the modern human brain.

So as I process all of this, I still believe consciousness does not reside in one single place but is the sum of our entire being. But our awareness that we are conscious probably resides in multiple regions of the brain.
