Before agents, Team Owners had all the cards

Players would have to negotiate on their own without knowing what similar players get paid
Owners had a team of lawyers and accountants on their side.

Why should someone who is only interested in playing Baseball be expected to negotiate a business deal?

It is a business even college level. A good agent is necessary for an individual to not be exploited by the owners.
