There are a host of reasons why free college makes no sense.

The degrees colleges give out are part of the labor supply and demand.

A lot of kids go to school and can't get a job.

Or they get jobs that don't pay well (compared to many blue collar type jobs).

Giving out all those loans (loans a lot of those kids don't expect to pay back) just puts more money in the pool. Colleges raise pricess accordingly.

Cut the loans and the number of kids going to college will decrease...so will "educated" unemployed.

On the flip side, things need to be a little better for everyone who is starting out. That is where the fix is needed.

To many big money people control housing and rent. And they are screwing the hell out of people.

Basically it's not worth it, that's what you are saying. Some European countries offer "free" higher education for everyone. Even for foreign students. I know because I went to Ludwig Maximilian for "free".
