How much do extremely wealthy people owe to the society that gave them the chance to prosper so much?

If we prioritized our spending, im not sure we would need more tax revenue.

But you agree that we need some, which means we owe that to the nation, no?

As i said a few posts up, social well being isnt the job of the federal govt.
I would probably support it if there was an amendment to the Constitution, though.

Why not? We can't have a society if nobody owes anything to it.

What's your definition of "society"? We aren't a hive society with a queen and millions of drones. We're a nation of individuals with the right to pursue our own happiness. If one becomes ridiculously rich by whatever means, they shouldn't have to fight off all the hands rooting around in his pockets.

A fair tax, not a punitive one is what should be.

Surely something, right? I see a lot of people talk like taxes are theft. Is it not just our obligation?

They do not OWE society anything more than the ooor individual does. They made good choices and the poor man didn’t. They took advantage of their opportunities, the poor man didn’t.

if you want to complain about somebody, complain about the legislators who have written a tax code that separates people into groups, and allows “deduction” for things.

What you have to do is go way back in time to understand how our infrastructure came to be.
Most of the original towns were built by those who came here.
Slaves, who cost money and required maintenance, were like the labor force of the later non-slaves until FDR came along.
Prior to the 60s, only MDs, Lawyers and Business Owners were able to get a mortgage.
The majority of legislation since the 60s, has been thrust upon us by Interest Group, both poor and wealthy.
We are, in a way, currently living an illusion.

I dont think people should be punished because they are more successful. IE much higher tax burden. They already pay most of the taxes anyway.
They also give a lot of money and time, to charity.

They'll still be the richest Americans if they are taxed more. They live in goofy amounts of excess that's only possible because the U.S kicks ass.

See, that right there is a big part of why people refer to taxes as though they're theft: the idea that because you personally disapprove of how someone else uses the money they have earned justifies you taking it from them to "better use" it for what you want.

Your thread title pretended to start from the premise of "what do they owe for what they get", but it's pretty obvious early on that you're really starting from the premise of "What do we want that we can rationalize taking".

Exactly how did they allow the super rich to prosper?

By creating the environment that allowed them to grow so well. Do you think Bill Gates would be where he is today if he had been born in some isolated African tribe where he didn't have the opportunity to learn how to read?

American “society” was around long before Bill Gates accomplished what he did...Society didn’t create Microsoft, Bill Gates did. Society’s reward is the privilege to purchase and use Microsoft products and services.

I wouldn't use a crook like BG to illustrate how someone becomes wealthy.

Sure but that doesnt mean they should be punished.
A person making 163,301 pays 8% more in taxes than someone that made 163,300. Thats bullshit.
A person that makes half a million, pays almost 40 of their income to the federal govt. Thats almost HALF. Half of the fruit of their labor and hard work, only to be stolen from an entity that will give it away to foreigners and use it to kill a bunch of innocent desert dwellers.

Add up ALL the taxes you pay in a year, whoever you are and what %?

Ridiculous.

And give to the most inefficient institutions in the country - government.

I know. People call taxes theft though. I also want to know what you think is appropriate as far as tax rates go.

Less is more.

The government is very inefficient due to no competitive pressures.

And corrupt, as well. There's not a job on the planet that a burger flipper couldn't do better than the government.

I pay my taxes and if I want to give further with charities or whatever, that should be left to my discretion, not gubbmint.

How much should taxes be cut?

Well, how much is the government spending that is wasteful and inappropriate?
The FBI came to Nassau County to investigate dozens of politicians pocketing taxes.
Most politicians are lawyers and know how to hide what they steal.
It takes 10 years to collect enough evidence to send someone to prison.

Depends on what you consider "society" and what you feel the rules should be.

We have the right to pursue our own happiness, but it shouldn't be at the expense of others

So who pays for the military and the police?

Oh, please. That's always the default. "If you don't love giving your money to the government, that means you don't want the military and police!" As if government budgets are down to the bare bones, and that's all our taxes are going for.

The truth is that we could support our military, police, and other essential government services far more lavishly than we do and still have lower taxes if we were frittering vast amounts away on every pork barrel project to come down the pike.
