You guys really get stuck on Byrd, but you know - he actually regretted his earlier association with the KKK and some of the stances he took. He spent a lot of his later life making up for it.

Just something to think about.
So did Strom Thurmond but you leftards didn't care. You still hate him and call him a racist every time his name comes up.

Did he? I'm not as familiar with him as I am with Byrd.

Senator Byrd renounced his racist past and deeply regretted his involvement in the KKK. He spoke about this very eloquently many times and explained that he was formed by the society in which he was raised but through the love for his grandson he came to understand how terribly wrong racism and segregation were. And yes, for many years he championed causes that benefited the poor and people of color - and he stood firmly against the illegal invasion of Iraq, speaking prophetically about the foolhardiness of that course of action. He was a great example of redemption.

He was a great example of a racist politician who did what he had to do to get elected. Didn't mean a damn word of it.

This was what...1952?

That's all you have?

It's more a civil war thing . You know, how they betrayed America and tried to destroy it .

Yup...traitorous, losing nation.

The only way to beat the loud and angry voices of hate is to meet them with louder and more reasonable voices. And that includes you, President Trump,” Schwarzenegger says in the video, posted to ATTN’s Facebook page Thursday. “In fact, as president of this great country, you have a moral responsibility to send an unequivocal message that you don’t stand for hate and racism.”

Schwarzenegger then offers an example of what that message might sound like: “‘As President of the United States, and as a Republican, I reject the support of white supremacists,'” he says. “‘The country that defeated Hitler’s armies is no place for Nazi flags. The party of Lincoln won’t stand with those who carry the battle flags of the failed Confederacy.’”

You know what, George Wallace did too at the end of his life...He doesn't deserve any fucking statues.

30 years later, Wallace apologizes to marchers

When you say the invasion of Iraq was "illegal", what particular law are you implying was broken?

Yes but they can't understand that any more than they can understand the importance of the Jim Crow timing.

Why would we want statues of war criminals and traitors? Why does the right worship those who wanted to, and tried to destroy their own country?

Remembering that during the campaign, trump and RWs said they wanted to destroy the US. They wanted to burn it down. And they still do.

Nope.

Every few days, you rabid RWs yammer about Byrd.

IMO, the fact that Byrd denounced the kkk is important and should serve as a role model.

Alt right does not have to stay ignorant. They don't have to stay fascist, kkk. Even trump could renounce his alt right loyalty and could work to become loyal to the US. So could you.

The only problem is that the Democrats never mind their people who actually DO those things and are oh-so-quick to write it off while they accuse conservatives of doing things they never even did and then never let them live it down!

It's more a civil war thing . You know, how they betrayed America and tried to destroy it .

They tried to preserve the status quo.

Kind like you morons want to preserve social security.

I'm not sure social security is comparable to slavery.

Preserving the status quo is preserving the status quo.

States were much more powerful and allegiances were high back then. The country was only 70 years old.

They were doing what they felt was right to preserve the economic capability of the region.

Looks like the petition is closed by Facebook a few hundred short of the needed amount. I guess Mark Zuckerberg is against the idea of fighting slavery and removing the idolization of racists! All of those schools, roads and bridges will HAVE to be renamed, the Left has said it. OFF with all things associated with historical symbols of racism in this country!
And, in that case, The Democrat Party started the KKK and Jim Crow laws. Need to get rid of the racist, slave-owning DNC.

But the Democrats have never stopped owning slaves! And therein lies the rub of all of this insulting faux-racial indignation: 150 years ago the Democrats had their slaves working out in the fields picking their cotton for them, today, they have their slaves trapped in their government programs which keep them poor and dependent. Their blacks, illegal immigrants, college kooks, freaks, weirdos, druggies, sex perverts and other minorities have simply exchanged picking cotton for them to now pulling voting levers and getting in bread lines------ voting levers to assure the continuation of the Democrats of course.

What difference does the year make? It was AFTER he left the Klan, meaning he was still a racist. And yeah, it's a lot more than the baseless accusations of racism you have against Trump. And may I remind you that Byrd led the filibuster of the Civil Rights Act in 1964, not 1952. Your hypocrisy is astounding.

We bring him up when you accuse conservatives of defending racists (like you continue to do with Byrd).

Bullshit. You're defending a fucking career racist who was a high ranking member of the KKK.

Says the sycophant who defends one of the Klan's most prominent members. You would never give a Republican a pass like that and you know it you lying hypocrite.

He deeply regretted his vote against the Civil Rights Act and his politics evolved dramatically over the decades following, to the point where he had a 100% favorable rating from the NAACP. He is absolutely an example of redemption through words AND deeds, and was unquestionably the most knowledgeable Senator who ever served in terms of Senate rules, protocol and history. He does deserve to be honored - America is all about redemption and 2nd chances.
