Ukrainian forces could implement key long-range precision strike tactics in the annexed Crimean Peninsula to "make it untenable for Russian forces," according to a former U.S. lieutenant general.

Writing on Twitter, former U.S. Army Europe commander, Lt. Gen. (Ret'd) Ben Hodges argued that Kyiv's forces needed to "isolate" Crimea using long-range precision strikes.

The Crimean peninsula was illegally annexed by Moscow back in 2014, and Russia's Black Sea fleet is based in the Crimean port city of Sevastopol.

"Drive Black Sea Fleet from Sevastopol with daily precision strikes. Ditto for Russian Air Force at Saky, etc," Hodges wrote.

Saky air base on Crimea's west coast, to the north of Sevastopol, was the target of attacks that destroyed 10 Russian aircraft in August 2022. In September, Ukraine's top soldier, General Valery Zaluzhnyi, said Ukraine had carried out the attack.

Ukraine should aim to ensure there would be "no sanctuary" for Russian forces to launch attacks, including drone strikes, on Ukrainian territory from the peninsula, Hodges said.

Russia's control over Crimea in the past nine years has not been recognized by the international community. A senior U.S. administration official confirmed on January 25 that Washington's view was that "Crimea is Ukraine."

I've heard that the security of Kiev is being traded off for the security of the Crimea.

It shouldn't be too difficult once they've obtained a thousand small diameter bombs to drop on russian forces.

I think you might find that taking Kyiv has never ever figured in their strategy. Then or now .

Of course they will hunt down every Head Office Nazi in Kyiv and Zelenskyy will have his necessary "heart attack." , but someone like Zaluzhny will take over and have a special understanding with Moscow, leaving the Kyiv oblast nominally independent.

To prevent it Russia shall kick moron Putin out and to give power to True Russian Patriots

No one can save Russia now. The simple truth is that Russia cannot afford to fight this war, Russia cannot afford its dreams of empire.

Wake up, you're shitting yourself.
You're not paying attention. Russia is unable to produce the tanks and ammunition it needs to fight this war and the gargantuan deficits it is running will lead to unsustainable hyperinflation by the end of the year. Putin blundered into a war Russi simply cannot afford, and there is no way to fix it.

Well, up to this point Russia used a fund earmarked for this (war) and other purposes (catastrophic disasters).

The fund is dry....they aren't completely out of ammunition yet or drones or missiles as has been reported for months and months now.
But stockpiles are dwindling rapidly.
In the latest news instead of 20,000 artillery rounds per day they have been firing something like 60,000 per day (if you believe Russian reports)

Where this might be half true....there is nothing left of Bakhmut.

And just because you fired artillery shells into an area that doesn't mean that you killed everybody. Russians tend to be too predictable too often. Meaning it's going to require boots on the ground and not just artillery shells. And that's where it will get even messier for Russian troops trying to take Bakhmut.

With what weapon, sling shots?

The latest US aid package includes bridge launchers, meaning the US expects the AFU to cross the Dnieper, and I suspect it will be to attack the Kherson Oblast, which is the doorway to Crimea. Once that is done, the weapons to attack Crimea will come.

Every month for the past year you loons have been saying.....
Russia is almost out of ammunition.
Putin is dying from this or that disease.
Russian economy is about to collapse.
Russia factories are unable to make enough tanks.
Ukraine is winning the war. ... :cuckoo:

You think those bridges will last once the Russians know they are there? What about exposing their supply lines to such a long range attack plan? What weapons are you planning on "coming"?

Are you ex-military or some armchair general?

The armored bridge launchers the US is sending can quickly set up bridges strong enough to allow attacking troops, armor, artillery and heavy supply trucks to pass a river or other obstacle to pursue an attack, so the bridges will last long enough. Longer range rockets for the HIMARS, missiles, drones will all be able to implement the strategy laid out in the general's plan. None of these weapons will come until Ukraine demonstrates it can take Crimea by first taking Kherson Oblast.

You do realize the US Army did away with all of their pontoon bridges few years ago because they could very easily be destroyed, right?

Where are these longer range rockets coming from?

Did you read bout a drone manufacturer giving Ukraine the equivalent of a Predator? There is no way they will ever use it because there is no funding or capability to get it to Ukraine.

Not pontoon bridges, but armored bridge launchers which are built on the chassis of a M 60 tank.

Lockheed Martin's HIMARS can deliver precision hits at almost 200 miles, more than long enough to take out most targets in Crimea.

I believe Ukraine has 18 HIMARS now.
