ROFLMAO, the primary purpose, job one, of any bureaucrat is to ensure the continued existence and expansion of the bureaucracy. And spending every penny of their budget, how else would they justify asking for more every year. They couldn't care less about the job they were hired to do. Besides that, only nonessential people are laid off during a shutdown which is about 13% of the workforce. And they always get back pay should they miss a check during their vacation.

This is the same tactic that they used to get the Patriot Act passed, a few days to read, understand and make a major life altering decision for a lot of people. Most of them have their staff do the reading, they can't be bothered with the grunt work. Also most will let the leadership tell them how to vote, so why bother to spend the time trying to read the bill. They don't write it, lobbyist do that. They don't understand most of language anyway because it references existing laws that they're making changes to and they don't pull those laws to see how the changes effect them. But you're right, they should be required to actually write the laws in the committees and subcommittees so they know what's what. And don't even get me started on the patriot act, it's a real POS.

Only 2 Democrats voted for the compromise bill that Speaker Johnson submitted yesterday. In contrast, 172 Republicans voted for the bill, with 38 voting against. So if just 33 Democrats had voted for the compromise bill, it would have passed.

IM2: The bill was going to pass until Musk and trump told Republicans they didn't like it. But the problem here is that Trump is no president and Musk was not elected by anyone.

And the compromise bill would have passed if Pelosi and Jeffries had not told Democrats to vote against it! The compromise bill contained 80-85% of the provisions of the original bill, but, no, that wasn't good enough for Pelosi and Jeffries.

The original bill was a monstrosity that was loaded with extra spending and also non-spending provisions that had nothing to do with keeping the government open. Trump and Musk had perfectly valid reasons for objecting to it.
