Then what purpose does it serve to write an amendment telling the President he cannot start a war with Iran if the President already understands that fact?

Chances are Iran would start it. Alrdy committed at least one actionable attack.

No they haven't. It takes a national emergency for the President to legally start a war absent congressional authorization.

Lets see.......Iran is a sponsor of terrorism and Iran is directly responsible for the deaths of American servicemen and Iran is causing hostel action in the middle east making that hell hole even more deadly and Iran kills gays....beats and rapes their women...mistreats their children in the name of their sick 12th century religion and wants to rid the would of the United States of America..... and the Dems side with them?.....Okay we have all of the facts we need now...The democrat party has become an enemy of America....

The Congress has every right to demand a vote on any action in Iran. They are equal partners as the Constitution dictates. Congress has the power to defund any action and alone has the power to declare war.

Around 30 Republicans voted for the amendment. That included liberals such as Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan. If Republicans in the Senate don't like it then we can always forget about the Defense Authorization bill.

George W Bush allowed a vote on a bill to authorize military action. That was when Republicans had a respect for the Constitution.

The President is Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. There is a reason for that.

You cannot defend the country by committee vote. The Executive Branch is permitted the first move.
