The group has had various names since it was founded in 1999 by Jordanian radical Abu Musab al-Zarqawi under the name Jamāʻat al-Tawḥīd wa-al-Jihād (lit. "The Organisation of Monotheism and Jihad").

ISIS was orginally Al-Queada in Iraq which began under Bush during the Iraq war it was defeated in Iraq with the troop surge and Sunni awakeing as it was called in Syria during the Obama years it regrouped rearmed and changed it's name to ISIS and became the pain in the ass we know today.
