Very apt quote here. "Controlling the past" is exactly what the whole Lost Cause revisionism movement was designed to do. Propaganda transmitters before there was radio and TV.

However it wasn't "left wing totalitarians" doing that; it was hyperconservative revisionists trying to turn the clock back to before a War they lost in hope of rehabilitating that Cause. And to a great extent, and for a considerable time --- they did.
