"A former Tri-State police chief won’t spend a day in prison time for his role in what federal prosecutors say was a “machine gun scheme,” according to the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana. Dorian LaCourse, 66, of Milford, was sentenced Wednesday in Indianapolis to three years’ probation, including six months of home detention. US District Judge Sarah Evans Barker further ordered that LaCourse pay an $11,800 fine, an amount roughly equivalent to what authorities say he received from the gun dealers for his role in the scheme. More than 100 illegally obtained machine guns, $2,500 rounds of ammunition and more than $6,000 in criminal proceeds seized from LaCourse’s office desk will also be forfeited to the United States.

LaCourse, who used to lead the Addyston Police Department, was convicted in April of using his law enforcement position to illegally help two federally licensed firearms dealers in Indiana acquire and resell about 200 fully automatic machine guns. The gun dealers resold the machine guns at a significant profit, court records show. Travis S. Riddle, acting special agent in charge of ATF’s Columbus Field Division, described the crime as an “egregious betrayal of the public’s trust.” LaCourse faced up to 15 years in prison. Federal prosecutors recommended a prison sentence of 70 months (nearly 6 years) followed by two years of supervised release, according to the plea agreement."

First of all, how is any gun in and of itself, illegal?? All guns are legal...per the 2nd amendment.....so if this guy used his position as a police chief to cash in on some machine gun sales; what business is it of big government??...we all know the police are vastly underpaid; so if a cop wants to use his position to build some wealth; why is that a big deal?? It's not like this man was some street thug or wetback -- then i would say, throw the book at them.....but this guy is someone who was deserving of our public trust; so why jump down his throat just because he did one bad thing??

Do you truly think trying to convict cops for breaking the law is supposed to deter them from doing it? No, it will just prevent good cops from being cops.....To the extent there are any bad cops in the police force; they are naturally weeded out by the god cops anyway...so the federal government going after good cops is actually hurting more than they think they are helping...and again, all he did was help sale some guns to the people who need them....and more guns equal a safer society; and more machine guns makes it even safer....

He was rightfully convicted and probably should have spent at least 20 years behind bars for this scheme from which he illegally profited.

The 2nd Amendment doesn't give us a free pass on violating existing laws.

"The federal government started regulating and keeping records of machine guns back when it passed the National Firearms Act of 1934.

That law mandated strict guidelines for manufacturers and put them in place for owners to register their machine guns.

Then in 1986, the feds imposed the Firearm Owners Protection Act which expanded on the original law.

It also banned possession and transfer of new automatic firearms and parts that fire bullets without stopping once the trigger is depressed.

Critically, legal machine guns must be manufactured before May 19, 1986 -- the cutoff date imposed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives (ATF)."

If the chief profited personally then good conviction....If it was merely his department that profited then bad conviction.

PDs get shed of unwanted weapons all the time and they usually have leeway to sell to a dealer of their choice that gives the department the best deal.

Machine guns are sometimes quite necessary for home security, depending on the threat that the individual citizen faces. This senior citizen lived in East New York, and was being pestered by a large, rowdy and armed gang.

Fortunately for him, his friend brought a couple of machine guns home from his military service in Korea so he didn't have to buy them. And as you can see, they turned out to be pretty useful.

Of course MOST people don't need machine guns, but each law abider should be able to make that assessment for themselves.

You do this all the time. You make a ridiculous statement where you take a side you are clearly opposed to try & bait a conservative into agreeing with your flawed logic.
You do this because you think you can twist whatever is said to prove a proggy talking point.
I've never seen you succeed because we recognize you coming from a mile away, but you continue to try the same tired tricks, over & over.
What's the definition of insanity again?
You're not too bright are you, Buffy?

Who gives the Deep State the authority to tell us what weapon we can or can't have??

Aside from you responding to a guy who "agrees with my point" -- you seem to assume that my characterization of Conservatives, is ACCURATE

Or else, you wouldn't be whining like a bitch about it....if you think the cop was wrong and should have received more time...say so....if not, whine...like you are now

Not really. Trump loves America; Biden, not so much
Can you tell me when Biden sent weapons directly to the Taliban?

I know Reagan did back in the day, but that was different...

But when did Biden "DIRECTLY" do this?? Or are you claiming since we left Afghanistan, we basically gave those weapons to the Taliban

Newsflash, that was going to happen anyway....

And Trump loved America so much that he wanted to give the Taliban money AND guns....DIRECTLY

But he isn't which is why I have no problem with anyone not spending a day in prison for a gun crime. (But i do agree this should not be a crime.)

Get caught as a felon with a gun? Pay a fine.

I disagree. Sen. Leland Yee, a rabid advocate of gun control for many years, run a gun-trafficking syndicate in San Francisco.

But he was allowed to plead "no contest" and only did 5 years because of his political connections.

Why should this Indiana police officer be punished more than that?

Yee was a lot worse as he had a high position in the government and was ultrahypocritical .

He was punished less than that.

Hypocritical. Do you think this cop ever arrested and helped convict anyone over gun crimes?

One case where the proper punishment was not rendered does not justify future cases where the proper penalty is not rendered.

This cop swore an oath to uphold the laws of the state and violated it in the very worst of ways.

Unsubstantiated claims made by an unnamed source.

Gee, what a surprise.
