Companies only paid American workers as well as they did back when America was great because unions forced them to. Even non union companies had to raise salaries to compete with union shops. Or they paid better for fear their employees would unionize.

And corporations have been pretty successful at breaking unions. They threaten the people that they will move. So most of the people who want to unionize don't because they don't want to lose their shitty paying jobs. Something's better than nothing.
