Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth backed up his decision to return a Confederate monument to Arlington National Cemetery removed by “the woke lemmings” who have erased Confederate symbols from American culture.

The Reconciliation Monument, a memorial to the Confederacy, was removed from Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia in 2023.

Hegseth explained his decision to bring back the monument to Arlington during a Fox News appearance Thursday afternoon.

“Because we recognize our history, we don’t erase it. We don’t follow the woke lemmings off the cliff that want to tear down statues,” the secretary said.

That helps to develop a long term sense of pride and tradition that is carried on from generation to generation. I don’t think most Northerners understand this at all.

There really isn’t a Northern culture per se because that part of the country has had many more immigrants from around the world who tend to congregate in neighborhoods. State and regional identifies were kind of lost. Northerners were much more transient than Southerners.

That heritage had nothing to do with the formation of the Confederacy. It would have been fine without it.

But those fine people with those southern values embraced slavery. They forced Jim Crow for 100 years. They looked the other way as their neighbors engaged in terrorism and participated in juries that unduly punished blacks and acquitted klan members

Sherman’s march to the sea took place three and a half years into the war at which point the southerners had already caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans.
