US govt has petroleum reserves
US military has more nukes than we’ll ever need
Police, Fire Depts etc have contingency plans for every scenario

But the US healthcare system who has gouged patients and insurance companies for decades....has a 1 month very predictable respiratory pandemic and they ran out of gloves and masks after 13,000 cases!?!?!?

Did they ignore that pandemics happen all through history??? Yep. They needed that vacation home and yacht more than a warehouse of surplus supplies.

It is not the job of the "for profit" private healthcare system to plan for a pandemic, nor to have supplies on hand to deal with one. It is the job of the "for profit" healthcare industry to make a profit for its shareholders, just like every other corporation in America. Corporations have no moral or social responsibilitities whatsoever. They are only responsible to their shareholders, not to the general public.

Planning for a pandemnic is a matter of national security, and therefore the job of the government. Individual medical corporations cannot spend their time or resources on things that aren't profitable, or that don't give a good return to their shareholders. That's not what "for profit" medicine does.

Did they not prep for an inevitable pandemic?

How much extra capacity should they have built, years ago, to prepare for this?
How much more were you willing to pay, every year, for these extra supplies to sit around?

In round dollars.

Thanks!!!

Hospitals are private entities, not governmental agencies. After being fucked over by ObamaCare most are struggling to to stay afloat, let alone stockpile expensive equipment just in case.

Where is it written a for-profit system should not maximise profits?

Do police and fire departments have contingency plans for every scenario? Yeah I don't think so.

Further, hospitals simply can't have thousands of ambulances sitting around for 50 years, waiting for a pandemic to hit.

Doctors cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. You can't have a thousand doctors paid to just sit around waiting for a possible illness to strike.

Your position is absolutely ridiculous.

Demonize an industry for a virus they didn't create............sounds like Tyranny from the left........and how they manipulate the public to look for a a SCAPEGOAT to force DADDY GOVT to take over............

The stock piles of medical supplies used in 2009 WERE NOT REPLACED.......

Where was the concern from the politicians then.......Proactive would have been much better than reactive...........but nobody knows when lighting will strike or WHERE...........

All three of your examples are government owned, funded and controlled by various levels of government. Health care is mostly owned, operated and funded by private businesses and funded by private health insurance. Big difference.

And there’s no “health care system”. There are a large number of stand alone health care and treatment centres.

So true- and gov't health care is a misnomer- the gov't's health depends on tax payers ignorance and it doesn't care - health is something that is good, bad, or avg- care is an emotion- our gov't's mental health should use it's tax payer funded ins to seek treatment.

Obama isn't the one that fired the pandemic response team in the WH, Trump did, and he did it back in early 2018.

Obama used up all the N-95 masks, some leadership

They certainly should have been more prepared than they were, even as a for profit business, in just their duty to protect their doctors and nurses and patients in the "what if" pandemic scenarios.

And so could our govt have been better prepared...with stock, for emergency pandemics to help the hospitals....

They should be working and coordinating as a team.

As a previous buyer when I worked, one way for the for profit hospitals to ease the cost of stock piling on site, with risks of the merchandise expiring before needed,

is to buy the materials to make the masks, gowns, gloves and have the factory they have contracted to make them hold the materials or reagents etc..... You don't pay for the labor and shipping costs until you need to replenish your stock and they make, and deliver them.... this saves weeks in production time, while not having to stockpile at the hospital, or pay upfront, for a completed product.

Another way is to contract with local factories, on an emergency basis, to make what they need.... have China producing the most of them, as now....at the much cheaper price, but buy some occasionally from a U.S. factory....at double the price.... this way you can cost average the item where the overall cost is still greatly lower than if it all was made in the USA....

But by doing it this way, you cover yourself by having a US factory or two, already primed with an assembly line to make them.... You don't need a new factory to bring up the new assembly line from scratch or having to work out kinks in it, as with all new product, and save greatly on delivery time and shipping costs from China, especially if you had to pay to fly them here for faster delivery vs boating the goods which takes 3 weeks to get here and clear customs.

The govt should have been working with hospitals to accomplish this.... it surprises me, if they have not been working together on these type of exercises of a pandemic scenario.
