I think it is more timeline than it is prevailing viewpoints. Those people have been here sometimes for years while the newbie lefties spend about three seconds on the board before jumping into insults and accusations. I always try to get them to quiet it down for a while until people get used to them, they would then be able to post more things like that. Plus, it is harder to insult and degrade people that you know. It is nice when people like MattSkramer and NE come online, they don't rush to insult and have cogent argument.

It is true that in order to survive on this board as a lefty you need some thick skin though. I just wish more would take it in stride and stick around. The board is more exciting and active when they are around.

Also true, the longer you're around, the more leniency you're allowed, and that's fair.

I think a lot of people just get sick of being lumped with a bunch of left wing fanatics every time they try and debate an opposing viewpoint. I don't know how many times I've been called a socialist liberal commie whatever... and it's hardly true. But I'd get the same if I went on a left board and debated them on what I disagree with. Then I'd be a right-wing fascist oil-drinking nut. But so goes the life of a devil's advocate style poster... In the end, wherever you post, you just have to learn to use a little discretion.

That's my point though, it happens on both sides but the right trolls don't piss many people off.

On another board, these left trolls would be treated the same way right trollies on this board are, with other people aiding in their defense by rationally supporting their flawed or incomplete argument. That skips out on the whole resorting to name-calling process because there aren't 10 people brething fire down your neck. I don't really see it as a left or a right thing, or as a fair/unfair thing, just a by-product of the make-up of the board.

I understand that, but I think you'll find the standards here a bit higher. My opinion of this board is pretty positive when compared to other boards..Unless you tread on certain subjects that are near an dear to the extreme right. Just be civil . Then it doesn't matter if yer left or right. And that is unique.

Bottom line....This is a pretty damn good board.

What I said is it's useful to talk to scientists about subjects that are not their specialty. Just because it's not their specialty doesn't mean they are full of "bullshit". Scientists are by nature intelligent and quite capable of understanding science in general, or related specialties. Face it, if they weren't specializing they would still be qualified to teach general biology, physics or whatever. Any scientist knows more about any aspect of science than an uneducated person, not just their specialty. Besides that many scientists have a lot of training in multiple areas and end of specializing in something for professional reasons. That doesn't mean they've forgotten their other training.

I think the point that's being made is people in the scientific realm, as a generalization, are more likely to be informed on a scientific issue than those not in the scientific realm.

I would trust a lawyer who has spent their entire career focusing on patent law to give me, say, legal advice regarding a divorce more than I would the average person. Does that mean there aren't average people who know more than the patent lawyer? No. But the chance for getting the better legal advice would lie in asking the lawyer.

Researching the issue for yourself should be a given for every aspect of life, no?

There are righties on this board who participate in some of the same actions that the lefties who get banned or threats of being banned do, but because they have the prevailing views of this board in their interests, they don't create the ruckus the lefties do. The banning appears more to be about the ruckus created than the actions causing the fuss themselves... but that makes sense and leads to a relatively peaceful board. It is nice to see Arch getting reprimanded, and not even from the lefty mod, so it certainly can go both ways.

My point is you're mistaken..Just because a Lawyer is a Lawyer doesn't mean they know what they're talking about. Believe me.
