Navy was rough back then. Still were having huge racial issues..race riots on the larger ships and bases.
Of course, Vietnam was rolling then..and a lot of folk joined the navy to avoid the army.
They were often shocked to find that the navy was military also....and that there are 100's of ways to get fucked up aboard a ship at war.

Did they show you this film in Basic? I started it when the action starts...was a 3 minute rundown before.
Anyway..the Constant was cruising about 700 yards away in front of the Forestall when this happened

I was a fire-fighter. HT2.
Saw that film dozens of times.

They also had a fire on another ship, either the Enterprise or the Oriskany.

Several years before I got on the Kitty Hawk they had a race riot.

The CO put all of the troublemakers off at Subic. Left them to fend for themselves.

I was long gone from Mesa where I'd get stoned between classes. Stopped that shit at state.

You had to.....and get a degree.
I learned at SDSU that you pretty much had to teach yourself because classes were too big. Also the academic standards were higher.
San Diego City was like H.S., but at SDSU, my first Chemistry class was 100-200 students in a theater, and you had to get there early to ask questions. Forget about not reading ahead of the class so you can understand what the prof was saying.

We had bottles of Port out front, and the winos would come in and buy those with whatever change they could scrape together.
I still remember that smell.
