Targeted tariffs for specific sectors with unfair competition are normal. We’ve been doing that for a very long time. It’s not very inflationary because it’s such a small part of the economy.

What's really stupid about calling a tariff a "national sales tax" is it implies you really have no choice. Um, you do. BUY AMERICAN and there is no tariff, thus you don't pay more. But real sales tax, which is a tax on EVERYTHING you buy, is NOT a choice the consumer can make.
