I don't know the motives Russia or Putin has but I doubt it's "world domination". Whatever it was that motivated them, it was likely due to a severe breakdown in communication. If they felt threatened by NATO or Europe or the US, it was likely due to a lack of clear communication.
Russia has had elections over the past few decades. They have elected Putin.
Why?
He seems like a strong leader to a nation that has been in constant turmoil over the past 100 years.
Went from the Bolshevik revolution, World Wars, lost an unbelievable amount of people in WWII, then the fall of the Berlin Wall. Not an easy life for the average Russian citizen. Putin seemed to galvanize the country (from an outside perspective).
Russia had major deals with Europe for gas and fuel.
Russia (from my understanding) is a beautiful country with St. Petersburg and Moscow having amazing sites, buildings and historical sites.
Why they would decide to invade Ukraine, I have no idea. Makes little sense. Some media state that NATO was increasing its presence at the Russian border. Ukraine (because of the war 10 years ago) could not become a member of NATO. It goes against NATO charters. A warring country cannot join NATO. If Russia wanted portions of Ukraine why not hold a referndum? Let the people of the region vote. If the majority wants to be a part of Russia, Europe or Ukraine would have a difficult time rejecting it. It would go against Europe, Ukraine and the UN's policies.
That's my humble opinion.
And at the end of the day, the Russian people and Putin need to ask themselves, what would they do if Ukraine tried to invade them?

Why do you think that is happening?
