Those same House Democrats also specifically redacted the name of Virginia Giuffre, now deceased, who had already said Trump had done nothing wrong. Virginia Giuffre is deceased, so there was no possible reason for redacting her name except to make Trump look bad.

Let me explain this conundrum. It comes from projecting how Trump acts as president onto how a normal presidency functions. It’s a conundrum born from internalized whataboutism, to the point where you can’t fathom that the people you dislike might actually behave differently.

When the DOJ handled the Epstein files under Biden, they looked at them from one standpoint: “Is what’s in here enough not just to secure an indictment, but a conviction?” If not, then they neither charged nor released the information for political reasons. And since Biden didn’t politicize the DOJ, he didn’t push it.
That’s how it’s supposed to work.

Under Trump, the DOJ is a political operation first and foremost. So when it handled the Epstein files, it used them as a way to score political points, until it realized what was actually in them. When they suddenly reversed course, it looked suspicious, because they’d already framed the issue as a political cudgel against the left.

Now it’s politically advantageous for the left to push it. They’re no longer bound by the usual presidential norms, and they’re more than happy to use it to inflict political pain.
