It's odd to hear people whining about "conformity" when I speak with so many families of international students who consider among the benefits of American education to be the creativity it spurs and how it values individualism. I suppose that if one were suffering from severe arrested development, just requiring students to be in a certain room at a certain time and actually sit in a chair might be considered 'oppressive,' but someone in such a juvenile emotional state could hardly be expected to function in society at all.
