Republican leaders adamantly opposed to Donald J. Trump’s candidacy are preparing a 100-day campaign to deny him the presidential nomination, starting with an aggressive battle in Wisconsin’s April 5 primary and extending into the summer, with a delegate-by-delegate lobbying effort that would cast Mr. Trump as a calamitous choice for the general election.

Recognizing that Mr. Trump has seized a formidable advantage in the race, they say that an effort to block him would rely on an array of desperation measures, the political equivalent of guerrilla fighting.

There is no longer room for error or delay, the anti-Trump forces say, and without a flawlessly executed plan of attack, he could well become unstoppable.

But should that effort falter, leading conservatives are prepared to field an independent candidate in the general election, to defend Republican principles and offer traditional conservatives an alternative to Mr. Trump’s hard-edged populism. They described their plans in interviews after Mr. Trump’s victories last Tuesday in Florida and three other states.

The names of a few well-known conservatives have been offered up in recent days as potential third-party standard-bearers, and William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, has circulated a memo to a small number of conservative allies detailing the process by which an independent candidate could get on general-election ballots across the country.

Among the recruits under discussion are Tom Coburn, a former Oklahoma senator who has told associates that he would be open to running, and Rick Perry, the former Texas governor who was suggested as a possible third-party candidate at a meeting of conservative activists on Thursday in Washington.

Mr. Coburn, who left the Senate early last year to receive treatment for cancer, said in an interview that Mr. Trump “needs to be stopped” and that he expected to back an independent candidate against him. He said he had little appetite for a campaign of his own, but did not flatly rule one out.

“I’m going to support that person,” Mr. Coburn said, “and I don’t expect that person to be me.”

Well, it's about time - but have they waited too long? Although anyone would be better than Trump - none of their named third-party candidates seem appealing.

gotta laugh at all this

the gop has a real chance to get the WH back with trump, but will fuck it up b/c they, the establishment, don't like trump.

they'd rather lose

now on the dnc side, they have a far left candidate and a candidate that is so far left he should be running 3rd party.

and not a peep

Is it any wonder they are failing?

They are ignoring the one candidate in a position to beat him and ever dumber:

They are telling everyone about their plan

If trump is the nominee odds are we lose anyway

And it only makes Trump stronger.

Only during the primary season. The General Election is a different story...

Not so sure about that. That the GOP hierarchy is against him allows Democrats to see him in a different light. Not as the GOP figurehead, but something new and completely different.

He has made an enemy of the GOP establishment, George W. Bush and Fox News, Mark Levin, Dana Loesch, Glenn Beck, George Wills, Charles Krauthammer, Megyn Kelly and a bunch more well known righties.

That more easily allows democrats, even hardcore democrats to connect with him. Hillary isn't a great candidate, she doesn't inspire people like an quintessential underdog fighting all sides and coming out on top that Trumps candidacy has inspired.

No wedge issues to exploit. No made up war on women, no abortion fight, no gay marriage fight, no racism fight...regardless how much liberals are attempting to manufacture one. Trump wants to stop illegal immigration. Who doesn't want that? Honestly, fighting it is a losing proposition. Hillary is pro-NAFTA and pro-TPP...said it was the "gold standard of treaties". Is she going to attempt to go back on that? She's ALREADY tried, looked stupid, and gave up.

So what is she going to run on? What did she do in the Senate? Nothing. First Lady? Protected Bill Cosby Clinton the sexual predator. Secretary of State? Email scandal and Benghazi, plus TPP.

Unions members are going to defect, independents will break for Trump, and the Trump Administration will begin January 2017.

So you approve of the government denying the peoples choice a chance to run for president?
Dont look now but your fascism is showing.....

What will happen is that the conservative vote will be split. If Trump emerges from the convention as the GOP candidate, there WILL be a 3rd party or independent conservative candidate put up against him. No way will either win the White House, and it will be a landslide victory for Mrs. Clinton.

So when are ypu Commies gonna do something about the Corrupt Vagina?

Nothing. Yer all gonna get pegged and then claim you enjoy it.
Since when does any decent man call a woman a vagina? You illustrate the extremely low caliber character of Trump supporters. And, BTW, when Trump supporters do that, they will literally lose millions of female voters. Way to dig yourself your own grave.
