Understanding the ā€˜Our Fatherā€™ - Dr. Scott Hahn - Deep in History

In this lecture from our 2009 Deep in History conference, Dr. Scott Hahn examines the seven petitions of the Lordā€™s Prayer, and takes a look at why this prayer is placed in the liturgy of the Mass after the consecration, and before the distribution of Holy Communion. He looks at the context in which Jesus teaches the prayer during the Sermon on the Mount, the significance of referring to God as ā€œFather,ā€ and more. Dr. Hahn argues that the ā€˜Our Fatherā€™ is a prayer that we pray much, but ponder little; and argues that a better understanding of these words, which come directly from the lips of Jesus, can lead us to a deeper appreciation for our relationship with God.

Scripture and Liturgy - with Dr. Scott Hahn

Dr. Hahn discusses how his study of typology and the interconnectedness of the Old and New testaments pointed him, at every turn, toward the historic Catholic Church. He shows the place of tradition in Christian life and how scripture is fundamentally connected to liturgy. He concludes with a discussion of the sacramentality of marriage and the powerful daily liturgy we are called to in the domestic church. (This talk was originally given in 2003 at the CHNetworkā€™s ā€œDeep in Historyā€ conference)

About the Deep in History Talks from the CHNetwork:

Why should we go deep in history? As generations before us have learned, history is the laboratory for thinking about the issues that matter most to us as human beings. By placing ourselves back into another time, we are able to look at our own time with more objectivity; we see its strengths and weaknesses. For Christians, there is the additional truth that ours is a historical faith. Christianity is rooted in the historical facts of Jesusā€™s life. The Church which is his body has lived, grown, and matured in space and time. The surest way to know Jesus and his Church is through the study of history, both biblical and post-biblical.

We hope these resources take you deep into the history of Christā€™s Church and thereby deeper into Christ. Please visit:

The Holy Spirit as Living Tradition - Dr. Scott Hahn - Deep in History

In a talk from The Coming Home Networkā€™s 2011 Deep in History conference, noted author and scholar Dr. Scott Hahn examines the proper role of tradition in the life of the Church. He looks at the misconceptions some Christians have about the Catholic understanding of tradition, and argues that if the Holy Spirit has been at work in every age of the Church, then knowing that legacy of providence is crucial to understanding how God works in His people today.

Dr. Scott Hahn: A Presbyterian Minister Who Became a Catholic - The Journey Home (04-05-2004)

Marcus and Scott answer open-line questions from the Journey Home audience. Scott gave his life to Christ in high school. He soon became a convinced Calvinist. In seminary some thought he out-calvined Calvin. While teaching a Bible class, as a minister, a student asked him, ā€œWhere in the Bible does the Bible teach that it is the sole rule of faith?ā€ Unable to give a solid answer he began an in-depth study, which would lead him Home to the Catholic Church.

Deep in History - St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher - Dr. Scott Hahn

In this 2006 Deep in History lecture, Dr. Scott Hahn discusses two great saints of the English Reformation: Thomas More, who died ā€œthe kingā€™s good servant, but Godā€™s first,ā€ and John Fisher, the only bishop in England who refused to acknowledge King Henry VIIIā€™s unlawful divorce. Both received the crown of martyrdom for their commitment to conscience.

In a day and age where so many, even religious leaders, are willing to compromise their principles in order to do what is considered expedient in the eyes of a society hostile to faith, the witness of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher is as relevant today as it was in the 16th century. Dr. Hahn tells their stories in an engaging and informative way that brings them to life for a modern-day audience.
