How Labour plotted to smear daughter of new army chief... whose only 'crime' was to work for Cameron

A Labour plot to smear the new head of the Army, General Sir David Richards, because of his daughter’s ‘crime’ of working for David Cameron was exposed last night.

The threat to target the General, who took up his new job just nine days ago, was one of the real reasons that Labour MP Eric Joyce resigned as an aide to Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth last week.

Former soldier Mr Joyce has told friends he attended a meeting at the Ministry of Defence where a discussion took place on how to target Sir David’s predecessor, General Sir Richard Dannatt, for criticising the Government’s failure to give enough support to British troops.

And The Mail on Sunday has established that Mr Joyce was also disturbed to hear Labour colleagues discuss Sir David’s 25-year-old daughter, Joanna Richards, who recently became Mr Cameron’s diary secretary.

Well-placed sources say Mr Joyce feared Labour was preparing to deploy more smear tactics against General Richards if he stepped out of line like General Dannatt.

Clement Attlee would be rolling in his grave right now. This mob of spineless, ethically diminished weasels, dare to call themselves members of the British Labour Party. They will do anything to hold onto power, yet they're not doing anything useful with that power. Are they so totally out of touch that they don't realise that they're destroying a once great Party? Labour was unelectable for years because of internal bickering (I'm thinking back to the Foot years) but least back then they stood for something other than simply holding on to power. I have no truck with the Tories but they will win the next general election and Labour will have to send a high pressure hose to clean out the shit from it ranks to begin the long climb back into government.

This administration has but one thing in mind, Diuretic. Self interest. They are taking the country nowhere but down, whilst lining their own pockets in the process. I'm sure you're aware of the recent scandals over politicians' expenses. Any honourable person would have stepped down by now, but these bastards are trying to keep their gravy train running.

I think Labour may well be done for on a much longer term basis. The Lib Dems have a good chance of relegating them to third place, as they have done in some recent bye-elections.

The recent scandals were reported widely here Boot, I know it crossed party lines but the government's response, if I can call rolling over and playing dead a "response", was pitiful.

I think you're right about Labour, sadly. I'd say this, New Labour should be put to the sword. A new Labour Party needs to be reconstructed. It needs to acknowledge its past, that time before this current manifestation of the Third Way rubbish, but then it needs to shape itself to meet the needs of working people in Britain as those needs actually are and not as Labour would like them to be. The old socialist model of Labour is irrelevant now. It was relevant and it saved Britain after WWII but now that model isn't required. But nor is the Thatcher Lite model of New Labour any use. The Tories represent their natural constituency, the LIb Dems are going to eat into New Labour's constituency and meanwhile no-one gives a toss about the real Labour Party's natural constituency. Labour, when it is driven from office, needs to purge its ranks in a manner that would have made Stalin blanch. Having done so they can then show their faces on the Opposition benches until they are invited back into government.
