The plant was not striking with the union. The plant had no union contract, and did not adhere to any union rules. They provided no union benefits. If some of their employees were union members, they became members while previously working for unionized companies.

The Only reason North Carolina left the union was because Lincoln ordered North Carolina to send troops to South Carolina and the state would have been surrounded by southern troops.
