Republicans are splitting on FCC Chair Brendan Carr’s pressure tactics. "We all should be very cautious" about regulating speech, one GOP senator told POLITICO.

A handful of prominent Republicans on Capitol Hill said they were worried about the implications of Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr pressuring a TV network to suspend late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.

Their comments suggest an emerging split in the GOP over the party’s views on free speech.

We all should be very cautious,” said Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.). “The conservative position is free speech is free speech, and we better be very careful about any lines we cross in diminishing free speech.”

ABC suspended Kimmel indefinitely Wednesday over comments he made earlier in the week about Charlie Kirk’s assassination. The decision came after Carr warned ABC’s parent company, Disney, on a podcast that there could be consequences if Kimmel stayed on the air.

The right to Freedom of Speech is cast iron *****, live with it!

The FCC was created by Congress and they have a job of enforcing federal law regarding what’s broadcasted on the airways

They have nothing to with free speech.

The Congressman is right about Congress making any other laws about free speech

Um, okay. Except you really haven't shown me what Kimmel said being all that wrong. Trump is milking Kirk's death for political benefit.

The only person responsible for Charlie Kirk's death is Tyler Robinson. Period.

And no one should want to go down the path of the FCC deciding what is inappropriate speech.

They will fold like paper. Note they have not actually done shit.

He said Kirk was killed by a maga supporter

Which was a bold face lie and attempt to distort the news

Again, the 1st Amendment is clear. Congress shall not limit free speech. Doesn't say a thing about the FCC. It doesn't even say anything about the President or the Judicial. You want to change that, let's have a Constitutional Convention of a Convention of the States and change it. We could make some other changes as well. Are you all good for it?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was established as part of the Communications Act of 1934. This act was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 19, 1934.
While the FCC can enforce public interest obligations, it cannot compel broadcasters to air content against their editorial judgment, which is a First Amendment concern.
Purpose and Functions
  • The FCC replaced the Federal Radio Commission.
  • It was created to regulate interstate and foreign communication by wire and radio.
  • The goal was to ensure that communication services were available to all Americans at reasonable charges.
Historical Context
  • The establishment of the FCC occurred during the New Deal era, a time when the federal government took significant steps to address the economic challenges of the Great Depression.
  • The FCC's creation marked a shift in how communication was regulated in the United States, emphasizing the need for a centralized authority to manage these services effectively.
The FCC continues to play a crucial role in overseeing communications in the U.S. today.
The decision of Disney group to terminate Kimmel was not based upon First Amendment considerations. It was strictly business.

The FCC was not created until 1934 by Democrats under FDR.

So? The FCC isn't Congress. You want to add the President, and Judicial, the FCC, has to be by a Constitutional Convention or Convention of the States. You can't just say it's included because you want it to be. That would take a dictatorship in which Democrats want.

Huh? The FCC is part of the executive branch and created by Congress

It’s not been ruled to be unconstitutional

Your free speech rights doesn’t mean you have a right to have a broadcast license

Roseanne Barr laughs.

As do so many who the Biden junta had deplatformed on social media over things like Hunter's laptop.
