There doesn't seem to be a general golf thread so here we go. Did anyone watch the Phoenix Open? Some Belgian won. I did a search no one has ever mentioned his name before.

Thomas Detry gets his first PGA Tour victory, a 7-shot romp at the Phoenix Open

24 under. 7 shots better than 2nd place. Pretty damn good.

Good looking guy

Finishing 2, 3 and 4th were Americans

Scottie Scheffler finished 25th

Golf course....Where old hunters go to die.

Or where hunters go when it's not hunting season anymore. I'm in Florida, in February. I'll hunt again in October.

I don't golf anymore. I will go if a group of friends or family want to, but I'm not looking to golf. I suck. It's fun once a year and I haven't golfed in years.

I do like watching the end of a professional golf tournament. Especially if it's close. This one wasn't close. But I thought I'd give this guy who won his first PGA tournament his first mention on USMB. You heard it here first. He looks like he might be a contender for future majors. Give Scotty Scheffler a run for his money.

I watched the Phoenix Open off and on especially the last day. If you are not a golf nut like I am, you probably haven't heard of Detry. I knew he was really good, one of the best swings ever. But no one expected him to blow away the field for his first PGA tour win.

I'm glad to have a new name now I know to look out for, root for. Now I want to see him win a major. The more Scotty Shefflers and Tiger Woods the better. For the sports. It gets people to tune in.

I tune in to see who's on top, hoping I know some of the names. But to be honest, I also like to see new names making a name for themselves. What a life. To make a lot of money doing that? Fuck!

Imagine you fuck up a hole and drop 3 strokes and now instead of tied for 3rd you fall to tied for 5th, or 6th. All the money you just lost. But imagine you make an eagle and jump up. It's got to be so stressful. Crazy how consistent these guys are.

I haven't seen anyone fall apart in awhile. Those are fun to watch too. Or to see some guy climb and catch number one. I haven't seen that in awhile too. Seems like the leader on day 4 stays the leader this year in every tournament I've seen. Have you seen any tournaments where a guy had it and fell apart?

2. How are the ladies doing? I haven't heard about Lady Golf in forever. Lots of Asians

Nelly Korda is number one woman? An American? And I've never heard of her?

Even number 5 is an American Asian. Lilia Vu

Nelly, I would hit this

I don't watch much golf and I have never played; however, it would have been cool if someone in my family golfed and I had started young. Seems like a game I would do okay.

I never paid much attention until recently. I noticed all the slopes and dives and how the golfers have to, for example, putt left on a curve for the ball to roll down a slanted hill. Some of these shots look incredibly difficult.

I follow the PGA but don't actually watch much because I don't watch much TV or streaming. I try to watch at least some of The Players Championship, Masters, PGA Championship, US Open and The Open Championship. Watching any of the RBC Heritage or tournaments in Texas in any year is a bonus.

I guess the worst loss I saw last year was MacIlRoy losing the US Open missing a 2 foot putt. That was brutal. I think Lydia Ko has been the best woman player over the last few years. She has 30 wins, Korda has 15. Vu is really young but super talented. I learn more for my own game watching the LPGA because I hit it about the distances they do. The men hit it so far now it's ridiculous.

You have no idea. I once played on a professional golf course or difficult course. The greens are not flat like they are at your local open to the public golf course.

It wasn't fun. Too hard. I like the easier courses. Score much lower and not frustrating.

This is why the golfers will do a practice round or two before a 4 day tournament. That's a lot of golf. But they need to play every hole to see how the greens are. And then sometimes the tournament might move the hole on day 2 or 3 of a tournament.

I don't watch PGA tournaments. Just the majors. But I'm staying in Florida for a month and I only have free antenna tv. Nothing ever on. This Sunday this Phoenix Open happened to be on so I watched.

I love the sound of golf on TV. A lot like I love hearing a baseball game on. I might not want to watch that baseball game, but the sound of the announcers and crowd, makes me feel good. Maybe it reminds me of my childhood. Very relaxing.

I once golfed with a woman who played in college. Man she was good. She was built like a brick shit house.

Not sure what the viewer numbers for the Genesis were but the top 20 finishes and the results the last couple of weeks show that the players coming back from injuries has really helped the PGA.

I will add generally that the pace of play criticism is still a valid discussion. When the weather is good and play gets suspended at the end of a day due to darkness with players still on the course, that's a problem. It happens way too often.

The greens on PGA level courses vary, some a very hilly some are flat. The main difference is they are usually very fast. The average golfer used to his local muni course greens would probably have several 3 or 4 putts in an 18 hole round.

Torrey Pines is a tough course with high rough. Usually what slows play dramatically is players trying to decide how to play a shot that has gone into a bad spot. There are some players who are notoriously slow but that usually isn't what backs up the course.

Perhaps they need to not allow as many into the tournament. How many foursomes finish after dark? 2? Then have 8 less players in the tournament.

You want to see the next Tiger Woods in golf? He won the Genesis on Sunday and has the talent and already has the background in winning at a young age that Tiger did when he started on the Tour. He was chosen for the Ryder Cup before he turned professional, the first European to have that happen (not exactly sure on the details, but they made an exception to get him on the team).

He's a super player but he only has 2 tour wins. Tiger had 4 majors plus 3 US Amateur titles by the time he was 26. Aberg has the tools to be world number one, but I don't think anyone will come close to Woods 81 wins and 15 majors.

Did you see him beat Maverick McNealy when McNealy had that incredible final round? His first lead in the tournament came on 18.
