Since then, a number of food and environmental activist groups have started testing for it in an array of products and finding it—albeit in small amounts—almost everywhere. Now a group of consumers are suing Quaker Oats, which is owned by PepsiCo, over the glyphosate that testing paid for by the plaintiffs found in the company’s Quick 1-Minute oats product.
The Quaker Oats are marketed as “100% natural” and the website tells consumers that oats, which are a very hearty crop, “require less herbicide spray than many other grains.”

- But even with the WHO designation, the EPA’s easing of limits, and the FDA’s nonexistent testing regime, it is by no means a foregone conclusion that glyphosate is going to give all of us—or any of us—cancer.
- The long-term effect of a lifetime of low-dose exposures to glyphosate, or most other commonly used pesticides, simply is not known.

This is no natural phenomenon of weather or disease. It's almost certainly the result of a crime. The disfigured leaves are evidence that a neighboring farmer sprayed a herbicide called dicamba, probably in violation of the law.

Dicamba has been around for decades, and it is notorious for a couple of things: It vaporizes quickly and blows with the wind. And it's especially toxic to soybeans, even at ridiculously low concentrations.
Damage from drifting pesticides isn't unfamiliar to farmers. But the reason for this year's plague of dicamba damage is unprecedented. "I've never seen anything like this before," says Bob Scott, a weed specialist from the University of Arkansas. "This is a unique situation that Monsanto created."

The story starts with Monsanto because the St. Louis-based biotech giant launched, this year, an updated version of its herbicide-tolerant soybean seeds. This new version, which Monsanto calls "Xtend," isn't just engineered to tolerate sprays of glyphosate, aka Roundup. It's also immune to dicamba.
Monsanto created dicamba-resistant soybeans (and cotton) in an effort to stay a step ahead of the weeds. The strategy of planting Roundup-resistant crops and spraying Roundup to kill weeds isn't working so well anymore, because weeds have evolved resistance to glyphosate. Adding genes for dicamba resistance, so the thinking went, would give farmers the option of spraying dicamba as well, which would clear out the weeds that survive glyphosate.
There was just one hitch in the plan. A very big hitch, as it turned out.

Nov. 27, 2017 -- The European Union voted to grant controversial weed killer ingredient glyphosate a new, five-year lease Monday.

With glyphosate's registration set to expire in December, an EU appeal committee voted to extend glyphosate's lease for five years, a third the length of the typical 15-year lease. A petition by 1.3 million EU citizens called for glyphosate to be banned after the herbicide was declared "probably carcinogenic to humans" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2015. "The guidelines maintained by [the European Chemicals Agency] would easily classify this compound as a group 1B carcinogen and, as such, it should be banned for use in Europe," IARC advisor Chris Portier said following the decision.

Glyphosate is used in weed-killing products such as Monsanto's Roundup. The National Farmers Union says the herbicide is used in practices it views as environmentally friendly. "Glyphosate reduces the need to use other herbicides, it helps to protect soil and cut greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the need for ploughing, and it enables farmers in this country to grow crops that help produce safe, affordable, high-quality British food," the union's vice-president, Guy Jenkins, said.

A European Union appeal committee voted to extend the lease of the weed killer glyphosate for five years on Monday​

A total of 18 EU states voted in favor of extending glyphosate's lease, while nine voted against and one abstained in the vote weighted by each member state's population. "Today's vote shows that when we all want to, we are able to share and accept our collective responsibility in decision making," EU health commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis said.

Following the decision French President Emmanuel Macron called for government officials to establish a plan to ban glyphosate in France within three years. Traces of glyphosate have been found in tests of foodstuffs, water, topsoil and human urine, according to the Detox Project, an organization that allows people to test themselves for traces of the chemical compound. "The people who are supposed to protect us from dangerous pesticides have failed to do their jobs and betrayed the trust Europeans place in them," Greenpeace EU food policy director Franziska Achterberg said.
