Do you think the New Zealanders would have been better off under the tender mercies of the Japanese army? Yes, the behavior of those American GIs was sad and inexcusable, but look what happened to local populations that fell under Japanese control: even in the cases of milder Japanese occupation, local populations had several basic rights curtailed and were forced to pay taxes to the Japanese.
Why would i say they would be better under the Japs? i have family who fought them, that has nothing to do with racists thinking they could export their Mississippi racism to a allied Country and it's people, some tried the same bullshit in a town 20 miles from where i live.
Also look at how the Kiwis were treating the native Māori s at the time. They were treated far worse than American Blacks were even in the deep south during Jim Crow.

No, it was not and never has been. Maoris are an integrated part of New Zealand. Look at their schools. Look at their footy side. In Aussie I lived in both Perth and Sydney and I travelled overland between the two through Adelaide, Melbourne, and Canberra. The only place I saw Abos was in the Nullarbor. Not one in any city, as I recall.

The Māoris got treated better than the Aborigines because they could and had fought back. Most people were racist or nationalist in the forties. Oddly enough the draft in WW 2 ended a lot of the inter country of origin hostility in the USA. Draftees found the Irish, Polish, Czechs, Scots, Hungarians, Italians and Germans were more American than the place of their ancestors came from. I don’t know a lot about the integrated Army of the fifties and sixties, but when I served during Vietnam, black soldiers self-segregated and were hostile towards all the other racial groups of fellow soldiers. Other than a few guys from the Deep South, whites were more than willing to treat our black brothers in arms like anyone else, but they weren’t having it. That’s why I resent IM2, Superbadbrother and Marriam so much. Their attitudes mirror those of those black soldiers from the early seventies. And in my opinion, they are trying to turn back the clock and destroy all the progress all citizens of the USA have made towards racial harmony and equality. Are we a perfect society? NO, but we’re are far better than we were and are trying to get better. Dwelling on past flaws just inhibits progress.
