Do you think the New Zealanders would have been better off under the tender mercies of the Japanese army? Yes, the behavior of those American GIs was sad and inexcusable, but look what happened to local populations that fell under Japanese control: even in the cases of milder Japanese occupation, local populations had several basic rights curtailed and were forced to pay taxes to the Japanese. This was 1943 in New Zealand when once again in WW2 American GIs tried to impose their racism in a allied Country telling locals where they could sit and drink, they tried the same bullshit in Bamber Bridge UK not many miles from my home, they were dealt with in both cases by the local people.
