Prime Minister Gillards proposed oxygen tax is set to be presented to the Senate this week despite the UN calling the tax a direct threat to human life.
In a speech to Labor party faithfuls, Ms Gillard defended the tax as necessary and warned that any measures to block it in the senate would be considered extremism.
Under the proposed tax, Australians would be taxed $1.75 per cubic meter of air they breath.
The government has declined to reveal what the essential purpose of the tax is.
