Gillard confident oxygen tax will pass Senate

Prime Minister Gillard’s proposed oxygen tax is set to be presented to the Senate this week despite the UN calling the tax a “direct threat to human life”.

In a speech to Labor party faithfuls, Ms Gillard defended the tax as “necessary” and warned that any measures to block it in the senate would be considered “extremism”.


Under the proposed tax, Australians would be taxed $1.75 per cubic meter of air they breath.

The government has declined to reveal what the essential purpose of the tax is.

Taxing air people breath isn't quite the same as taxing the pollution corporations produce.

So therefore we are benefitting from what someone else produced or what something else produced.

a person breathes in daily amd how much is turned into carbon dioxide.

So they will tax us on taking in air and emitting carbon dioxide and polluting the environment.

Ousted prime minister Julia Gillard has urged her former Labor colleagues to stand by carbon pricing ahead of the coalition's plans to have it scrapped during federal parliament this week.

Climate change will be the key battleground when the 44th parliament sits for the first time, with the Abbott government expected to introduce its carbon tax repeal bills first thing on Wednesday morning.


The Greens oppose the bills while Labor says it's open to scrapping the tax if the government replaces it with an emissions trading scheme - something the coalition is not going to do.

Ms Gillard on Sunday encouraged her colleagues to continue "staring down the most reckless of fear campaigns".

"I always want our nation to be brave enough to shape the future, not to be passive and overwhelmed by it," she told the Victorian Women's Trust in Melbourne.
