Who is they?
Each person is acting on their own.

If you address and treat each person within their own unique context, it makes it much easier to contain and resolve problems.

If you drag other perceptions or people collectively into your current issue at hand, that is what triggers anyone to become defensive or offensive.

Better to defuse the situation, not pour more fuel on the fire. Namecalling is a tactic to incite worse reaction and push buttons.

If you prefer not to interact or encourage dialogue with an unpleasant person, stay low key, let them do all the talking. Don't engage more than you need.

Leave it alone, and they will seek a different target to test.
