Actually, Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO is that line, too. So, NATO wants to cross one line, Russia is ready to cross another.
And yes, Russia prefer to face consequences of a nuclear victory (less than twenty million dead) , than of a conventional defeat (lost of Crimea and Novorussia and then - total genocide of the Russians).

Russia has missiles to deter anyone from invading their homeland.
To use them to invade a NATO country would lead to retaliation that would destroy them

The more realistic option if they truly thought it was win in Ukraine or their government falls would be cruise missiles (I doubt they would be dumb enough to use even short range conventional ballistics) to hit military bases supplying Ukraine in Poland, Hungary, Romania, and maybe even Germany. If they really wanted to show they can break things it would be coupled with a submarine launched cruise missile attack on the Suez Canal or the Saudi oil fields.

At that point it would be on NATO to escalate further with retaliatory strikes on Russia, and I don't know if they have the stomach for it. Russia would also threaten the US, Britan and the French (the three NATO Nuclear powers) to stay out of it or face nuclear war, trying to limit the response to the countries hit, thus weakening NATO.

That's a Causus Belli if Russia wants to make it one. We are supplying them arms being used to kill Russian Soldiers. We should be doing it, but again it's still a reason for them to be a bit angry at us.

As I stated in my post, it would require Russia seeing it's choice between winning in Ukraine or the current government collapsing.

It may not be a smart play, but it would be a desperate one, much like the Japanese choice to attack Pearl Harbor.
