We are essentially validating a renegade province acting independently of the recognized and sovereign government.

The only other example I can think of right now is that chunk of Somalia that has acted as its own country, but until now, no one has recognized it. Ethiopia is trying to make a deal with them, but the other nations in the region are pushing back.
