German Railways needs billions to recover

I’ve noticed this. As much as l like public transport in Germany; buses every few minutes in my area, l’ve seen practically empty buses, maybe one or two passengers on them drive by at certain times of the day. Other times, they are so crowded, there is nowhere to sit. I don’t know what the answer to this is.

I think taxis are expensive
They are repositioning....

They are traveling empty to position for a peak load.. These routes generally make money even with empties... This is very effective with bus corridors.

The full load covers all of that...

A lot of this is down to bad planning, i.e. employment in one sector and residential in another... The more that is mixed the more those buses are busy both ways... My town is truly awful, ultimate brain fart of private developers to do what they liked instead of actually planning... Built all business parks and industrial parks on cheap land on one side of the city and everyone liked living by the sea on the other side of the city, ten have only 3 bridges...

Me too. Although l use the Kurzstrecke sometimes.
Friend of mine was on a weekend break in Luxembourg. Public Transport is free...

I was thinking. Is this a good idea...

All pay and ride, inner city transport paid by income tax... step on and step off... Increase it by 50% new routes and more frequency...

Would society and/or economy benefit?

I can see Right Wingers having an eplictic attack... But think about it, if we make sure of the service and monitor it well, could this change the game?

Luxembourg’s a small place (and boring)

Much easier to manage.

Luxembourg is small but got small resources...

Think of it as a pilot project....

It could be a major change in how we get round a city especially in Cities over 50k and under 250k

Hey deutsches lan, kaputt ist deutsches ban, jetzt kannst du nicht mehr fan.

The German Railways needs billions to repair its rotten tracks.

"The head of Germany's Deutsche Bahn train operator on Friday said the company needs €150 billion ($170.5 billion) to modernize its rail network. The company had a net financial debt of about €32.6 billion in 2024.

Deutsche Bahn CEO Richard Lutz told German news outlet T-online that this €150 billion would be in additional financing. He said €80 billion would be needed for the "existing" rail network for repairs and refurbishments.

Lutz said the rest of the financing would be used for "expansion measures" such as building new train routes or for the expansion of train stations."

That's Thatcher for you -
