German president: ‘Mistake’ not to object to Nord Stream 2

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier Monday admitted that it was a mistake to cling to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project between Russia and Germany for so long.

"My holding on to Nord Stream 2 was clearly a mistake," Steinmeier said in Berlin, according to German media. "We held on to bridges that Russia no longer believed in and that our partners warned us about."

For years the U.S. and other allies of Germany berated Berlin over the pipeline project, arguing it would be dangerous for Ukraine and send a wrong signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin after he annexed Crimea in 2014.

German president: ‘Mistake’ not to object to Nord Stream 2

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier Monday admitted that it was a mistake to cling to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project between Russia and Germany for so long.

You are wrong, Walter. Nord Stream 2 is only a pipeline. It was the only pipeline from Russia which had been under friendly fire. The situation was from the German side always clear and transparent for everyone. "Our partner warned us" is not this what really had happened in context of a "critics" which had partially the character of a declaration of a war on Germany.

The situation changed when Putin started his totally mad war against the Ukraine - not before this had happened. We gave Russia all chances and took some risk. Now we have to pay for our will to like to live in peace also together with Russia. But this will was not wrong and the politics had also not be wrong. Now we have big problems because we trusted in Putin's Russia - which was once also the Russia of Gorbachev, what no one should forget. A good start - a bad end. But no one is able to trust with mistrust. So do not confuse the logic of time. We offered peace - Putin chose war. Not our fault - Putins fault.

For years the U.S. and other allies of Germany berated Berlin over the pipeline project, arguing it would be dangerous for Ukraine and send a wrong signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin after he annexed Crimea in 2014.

The real problem started in 2008 when Putin attacked Georgia. The annexion of the Crimea is more a kind of joke of world history when someone tries to find out the way how the Crimea came to the Ukraine after Russia had conquered it in 1799. This had not been a problem which had not been able to be solved with some money.

The irreversible step is Putins war in the Ukraine. How this will end no one knows now. We know only that a turn of an era is in flow. Whatever will happen - I fear afterwards the world will not be any longer the same world which we knew.

Okay - some things always will stay to be as they ever had been. Beethoven never heard his music to Schillers "Ode an die Freude" - or did he?
