George A. Romero, Director & co-writer of the 1968 smash hit, Night of the Living Dead, has died of cancer in his sleep at 77. Born in Bronx, NY, on 4 February, 1940 to a Cuban father and Lithuanian American mother, produced his classic film on a budget of $114,000USD and filmed near Pittsburgh, PA, where he attended Carnegie Mellon University, went on to gross $30 millionUSD, though due to a copyright glitch, Romero saw very little of it, in addition to spawning a whole series of sequels and fathering the current generation of zombie films.

Though best known for his zombie spectaculars, Romero also penned and directed many other films including art house vampire film Martin, the campy Knightriders, the send up of pulp comic books, Creepshow, and Monkeyshines. He also executive produced the Tom Savini 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead.

Best known, however, were his "living dead" series of sequels: the original 1968, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, 1978, Day of the Dead, 1985, Land of the Dead, 2005, Diary of the Dead, 2007, and Survival of the Dead, 2009.

Romero is survived by his wife, Suzanne and two children.
