CLEVELAND ― Presidential candidates normally use their convention speech to paint a bright, optimistic picture of the country under their future leadership, aiming to leave Americans full of hope. But not Donald Trump.

On Thursday, he took the opportunity to describe a dismal state of affairs in the United States, telling Americans that the convention was occurring during a “moment of crisis” and that America is currently a “dangerous environment.”

The grim tone of his speech compelled former George H.W. Bush White House speechwriter, Mary Kate Cary, to comment on Twitter.
