Thus admitting that buying American made absolutely means higher prices. And here we were subjected ad nauseum to the wails about how we were supposed to buy American since it's the patriotic thing to do. Now it means imposing hardship on the poor. Why wasn't that an issue before?

It has always been an issue. Competition is what life is all about. Getting the best for the lowest price. Due to our high standard of living, other countries beat us in cheaper labor and therefore cheaper prices. As such, we cannot be competitive.

Life in general means that nothing is free, meaning that there is always a price to pay for everything. The price for us is that we have to pay more for maintaining our higher standard of living.

Trump is trying to force other countries to pay more for selling to us, therefore making them pay for our higher standard of living. That will not work because those other countries will simply look elsewhere in order to maintain what makes them successful. If they have to pay more for selling to us, it means that they will sell less and selling less to us (even though we as a country buy a lot) can be made up by selling more to other countries. Nonetheless, reality is that Toyota is a better and longer lasting car than Ford. Even there, we are losing but its our fault. Not China's.

You cannot force other countries to lose their edge, even though they will lose sales because of the tariffs. It is a lose-lose situation for all.

What needs to be done is invest in making OUR products better and also making our science better, so we can have products that no one else has and have to buy from us. If a product some other country makes lasts 2 years and our products last 5 years, we become competitive even though our products are costlier.

What is happening is that we are actually losing in that as well. For example, AI. We have NVDA and it was rising for several years because we were the ones inventing AI. Nonetheless, China has better scientists than we do and they came up DeepSeek that has better AI at half the cost and now NVDA is falling and DeepSeek is rising.

What we need to do is spend more to be a better nation and not try to use money and power to force others to kowtow to us, like Trump is trying to do.

The road he is following is one of ignorance and not betterment.

Trump oddly, won the 50K to 100K sector and even more mysteriously, the 50K and below. (Previous election, Biden won both of those, while Trump won the 100K+)
