Economic Fears Give Obama Clear Lead Over McCain in Poll

Turmoil in the financial industry and growing pessimism about the economy have altered the shape of the presidential race, giving Democratic nominee Barack Obama the first clear lead of the general-election campaign over Republican John McCain, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News national poll.

*snip*

More voters trust Obama to deal with the economy, and he currently has a big edge as the candidate who is more in tune with the economic problems Americans now face. He also has a double-digit advantage on handling the current problems on Wall Street, and as a result, there has been a rise in his overall support. The poll found that, among likely voters, Obama now leads McCain by 52 percent to 43 percent. Two weeks ago, in the days immediately following the Republican National Convention, the race was essentially even, with McCain at 49 percent and Obama at 47 percent.

Nah...let's elect the guy who says write a check for 700 billion dollars and privatize their profits but socialize their losses....

this isn't a tax issue. don't get confused... something has to be done here... but it doesn't have to be by dint of giving the scum who got us into this a blank check with no accountablity.

surely you don't have a problem with that.

BTW, you do know taxes are necessary to pay the bill on stuff like this and Iraq, right?

Yes lets elect the guy that wants to tax business more when they are all losing money and to steal those that make money profit with "windfall" profit schemes. Great plan indeed. That sure will make business more solvent.

just more lies RGS... taxing big business and people who make more than 250K a year isn't a bad idea.

Also taxing windfall profits isn't a bad idea either.

Ya ruining our economy is JUST such a winner idea, lets all vote for the guy that plans to drive even more business out of Country, costing us more jobs, more tax base and more problems. Great defense Jillian.

Lets have Obama admit right now he is against ANY bail out of the current crisis, can you get him to actually say that ON AIR? It should win him MILLIONS of votes and shore up his ratings big time.

Ruining our economy? lol.. Yep.. bush has done a great job of that.

Once again you partisan hack Bush has almost nothing to do with it and never has. Congress is to blame and remind me who runs congress and who in 2003 REFUSED to change regulations when Bush ask them to? Which party was it that blocked those changes then? And which party was it that spent the last 40 years making it easier and easier for people unable to repay loans to not only get them but make institutions required to GIVE them?

You are as dumb as a box of rocks.

ummm are you paying attention? our economy is ALREADY in ruins.

he's not against the bailout...he's against writing a blank check, he's against the american tax payer footing the bill for the fuck ups of those on wall street, he's against just handing over the keys to the kingdom with no oversight and no accountability. Seems reasonable to me.

Sure thing, the dems want to protect te people that owe the money AND let them keep the property. They want to ensure bad loans continue to the poor and marginal so they can rake in votes by saying they covered their asses.

They want to drag out any plan till after the election no matter the cost in world economy or to this Country so they wont be held accountable for their crap.

It aint gonna sell well though when it starts getting worse while they drag their feet for political gain.

what will happen to all the property that has these bad mortgages on them? should the government take them and kick out the people who live in them? what would they do with them? Why not allow the people the opportunity to right their situation? pay their mortgages to whatever degree they can until they can fix the problem. It sure beats the banks sitting on empty houses with NO revenue coming in, wouldn't you say?

and why do the banks get assistance when they helped create this mess but the homeowners don't? That mentality shows that you don't give a fuck about the PEOPLE!

and who is dragging their feet? the Dems aren't prepared to just hand over control to an administration that ALREADY proved they can't be trusted! why would ANYONE think that was a good idea? The Bush administration has already proved themselves inept...writing a blank check won't solve that issue. There needs to be oversight and accountability.

LOL, sure thing. Keep up the foot dragging, we shall see how the voters feel in a couple weeks.

Of course you are...because screw everyone else...you want things to go boom...

More importantly, the turn in the polls is what I found interesting. Apparently, for the time being, voters felt much more comfortable with Obama then with McCain's fumfering around.

yes....let's see what happens in a couple of weeks... or let's see how the debates go this Friday...

People don't trust McCain. He came off as childish and ill-prepared to handle this crisis.

I personally have no problem with the bailout as long as the PEOPLE get help TOO! Just helping the banks is bullshit and just more of the same.

The last time windfalls profit tax was in place--GASOLINE WENT UP! Do you really believe that installing another tax will not end up at the gas pump!

Did you read the article in the NY Times in 2003 where the Bush administration set forth legislation to reign in Fannie & Freddie, & where democrat Barney Franks blocked the bill & actually quoted as stating there was nothing wrong with Freddie & Fannie!

That was 5 years ago.

Do you actually believe that taking more tax dollars out of business is going to help "main street"? Tax hikes=job losses

I don't know either candidates precise position but here is what Obama is saying:

• No Golden Parachutes -- Taxpayer dollars should not be used to reward the irresponsible Wall Street executives who helmed this disaster.

• Main Street, Not Just Wall Street -- Any bailout plan must include a payback strategy for taxpayers who are footing the bill and aid to innocent homeowners who are facing foreclosure.

• Bipartisan Oversight -- The staggering amount of taxpayer money involved demands a bipartisan board to ensure accountability and oversight.

It's a start, anyway....

The democrat party--staring in the Carter administration--wanting to make certain poor people could share in the American dream--has now made us all poor.

700 Billion dollar bailout--when 4 million homes are in foreclosure--while 94 million Americans pay their mortgages on time. What a deal!

You think THIS is bad? You haven't seen anything yet. I'm against any kind of bailout so our country can see what bad really is like.

I agree, it is not the responsibility of the American taxpayer to save the bankers ass, likewise it is not our responsibility to save the greedy people who bought houses they could not afford. Let the whole thing go down the shitter and then see where we have to go from there. If we do this shit now we will have to keep on doing it get a backbone and call your congresscritter.

no it's not a start, oversight? my ass, they could have had oversight a long time ago when Greenspan and McCain sounded the alarms...
