Damschroder admitted to personally accepting a $10,000 check from former Diebold contractor Pasquale “Patsy” Gallina made out to the Franklin County Republican Party. That contribution was made while Damschroder was involved in evaluating Diebold bids for county contracts. Damschroder was suspended for a month without pay for the incident. Despite the scandal, he was later appointed as Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted's Director of Elections. The ghosts of 2004 election irregularities Diebold was at the center of Ohio’s 2004 election debacle, much of this captured in an article by Free Press Senior Editor Harvey Wasserman and this author, entitled, “Diebold’s Political Machine.” Walden "Wally" O'Dell, chairman of the board and chief executive of Diebold, was a long-time funder of Republican candidates. In September 2003, he held a packed $1,000-per-head GOP fundraiser at his 10,800-square-foot mansion Cotswold Manor in Upper Arlington, Ohio. He was feted as a guest at then-President George W. Bush's Texas ranch, joining a cadre of “Pioneers and Rangers” who pledged to raise more than $100,000 for the Bush reelection campaign. The problem isn't the machines. It's more in the registration system.

I can speak to that. I worked this election as an IT person, saw everything up close and personal.

Los Angeles county uses Smartmatic, and those machines are all paper ballots. None of them are connected to the internet. Each machine is a stand alone computer, with just a printer and a secure ballot box. The ballot boxes are secured every day and overnight, by a set of coded zip ties. If anyone tried to tamper with a seal, it is instantly and loudly visible. IT people are required to scan the seals every morning and every evening, which established overnight integrity.

How it works is, you check in at a desk, where the workers have iPads that are connected to LA's registration system. Once they've identified you, they print a ballot for you on the spot. The ballot has a personalized QR code on it, and it has all your choices for the precinct where you live. You take this paper ballot and walk over to the Smartmatic machine if your choice, feed the ballot into the machine, and vote. When you're done voting, the machine gives you the ballot back so you can look at it and make sure it's correct. Then, you put the ballot back in and it goes directly into the secure ballot box.

It's actually a very good system, probably one of the best in the country. If there's an issue, it's with the registration/lookup. And I only saw one mistake in 10 days of voting, with thousands of voters. Once and only once, someone who lives in Sun Valley was given a ballot for Lancaster. It was detected immediately, before the person had a chance to vote. In such a case the person is given a provisional ballot with the correct information and it's up to the officials on the back end to sort it out.

I think it’s a joke that with the technology we have that any non citizen can vote. Ridiculous. And with the technology we have, irregularities should be able to be caught right away.

I can’t believe my brother can look up to see if his kids voted. I think even that’s an invasion of privacy, but I would be okay with the California Republican Party and Democratic Party having the full voter registration list. Here’s everyone who is registered to vote. Find anyone who shouldn’t be on the list, let us know.

The old mechanical voting booth left no paper trail at all. All the levers were pretty cool though. Plus their use in making a selection was much more satisfying than subsequent systems of punching holes in a ballot and now filling in circles.
