If he declassified them prior to noon on January 20, 2021 why did he and his staff still treat them as classified?

Yes he does, if on top of taking them home he wants to declassify these documents. This asking permission is a strawman. He doesn't need permission. What he needs is for the government to be made aware of an action he took (declassification).

If he is no longer president though he has NO RIGHT to have them at his house at all.

He's not required to fill out paperwork. You are actually right on that one. He can simply state "these documents are now no longer classified". Where you run into trouble is that that act would certainly create paperwork. Paperwork for all the people below Trump that need to deal with all the ramifications of that statement.

The following day White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre told reporters that the Biden White House learned of the raid in the news.
Jean Pierre insisted that the President was not briefed on the raid.

Why is this thread still being discussed since the premise on which it is based is itself a lie? The article referred to cites the admin's involvement in the April 12 decision, acquiescing to Trump's request that the FBI not be granted access to the docs in the possession of the NARA.
That matter has nothing to do with whether the admin was informed (it was not) of the DoJ search at MaL looking for the stolen classified docs Trump's attorneys told the DoJ had already been returned.

Time to put this worthless, disingenuous, dishonest thread out to pasture along side the manure it belongs with.
