Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has attributed the nation’s growing unemployment rate to the ongoing migrant crisis, following the announcement on Wednesday to cut the benchmark interest rate by 0.5 percentage point for the first time since early days of COVID-19. Addressing reporters, Powell explained that increasing numbers of people entering the labor market and taking up new positions have led to an increase in unemployment figures, while also noting the effects of slower hiring rates across the board.
