Another failure.

Schools don't have to show it. But districts across the country have been inundated with phone calls from parents and are struggling to address the controversy that broke out after Education Secretary Arne Duncan sent a letter to principals urging schools to tune in.

Districts in states including Texas, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Virginia and Wisconsin have decided not to show the speech to students. Others are still thinking it over or are letting parents have their kids opt out.

Some conservatives, driven by radio pundits and bloggers, are urging schools and parents to boycott the address. They say Obama is using the opportunity to promote a political agenda and is overstepping the boundaries of federal involvement in schools.

This is really stupid. My children watched many of George Bush's speeches at school and I had no problem with that. They also watched the debates, again, no problem with that...damn, they even watched the Palin/Biden "debate."

I can't believe as a country that anyone has a problem with children watching a speech of an elected official.

Watching a Presidential speech and asking kids to discuss it or whatever is fine.. having a President tell kids to study hard and work hard is fine....

Having anything of indoctrination is not fine.. having teachers have assignments based on specifically supporting the President is not fine....

I like that now parents will be able to review the speech first (I just heard this while getting the kids ready for school, while listening to the news)... I will indeed review it and I will indeed excuse my children from this if there are undertones or specific things that force support one way or another....

As for assignments specifically revolving around support or 'how you will help the President' or whatever, that are specifically pointed at one political agenda... I am not for that kind of indoctrination bullshit, whether it be one side or the other... it is not up to the school, President, or some specific teacher to put my children down any specific path of politics or ideology

I just love the recent turn of events orchestrated by the republicans. They have convinced people who should otherwise be sane that somehow our President Obama is an evil, mind warping dictator who must be kept away from our children. They used this ploy in trying to prevent Obama from making commencement speeches and now to block his speaking to schoolchildren. Can someone explain exactly what crime Obama has committed? Trying to pass healthcare is a crime?

Meanwhile, the president they forced on the American people invaded a country unprovoked based on a lie and ordered the use of torture and other human rights violations. They are pefectly fine with subjecting children to George Bush

"To those listening, we would like you to ignore the President and quit school. Go find a good job and forget about this education stuff. President Obama is just trying to indoctronate you into his socialist views. If he tells you to not take drugs, ignore that also. He did them when he was young, so now it is your turn. God Bless each of you!"

I called the principal of the school where my child goes ths year and told them in a civil manner that Obama is a far left wing radical who hates this country, a fascist, and that his address to all public school children could amount to indotctination into his radical ideas. I told them that there is no way my childwill be involved with the speech or any assignment related to it.

I have no idea of the content of Obama's speech, but I don't trust him to say anything to my child He is one sick twist!
