Add in the now common use of body armor that is proof against rifle calibers, even flexible armor, and taking a center mass shot is most likely not going to do squat.

That was a 20 year old kid, that worked at a retirement home, not a trained sniper. Let me know when you find his sniper training for using his daddy's AR-15. I am real curious to know who taught him to zero that weapon. At a 100 meters shooting distance, from prone position, it wasn't anybody any good.
